WITCH FINGERS

RECIPE BY

ANN VELDEMAN

As the mother of two sons and a step-son, I always enjoy a spot of baking. And so, for years, I’ve had a tradition at home: making witch fingers for Halloween. Even though they’re teenagers now, they still look forward to this time of the year.

Ingredients
For the dough

  • 400 g flour
  • 200 g Zùsto
  • A little vanilla essence
  • A little almond essence
  • 1 large egg
  • 200 g unsalted butter
  • Blanched almonds

For the decoration

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Red food dye (you can replace it with any red jam)
  • Cinnamon powder (for decoration)

Method

  1. Bring the butter to room temperature.
  2. In the meantime, mix the Zùsto with the flour.
  3. Add the butter and the egg to the flour.
  4. Mix until the egg is properly combined with everything else.
  5. Add the vanilla essence and knead the dough until everything is good and supple.
  6. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and put it in the fridge for half an hour.
  7. Make balls from the dough. You want them to be about as big as a walnut.
  8. Make each of the balls into a finger shape. Use a knife to carefully cut little stripes on the place where the knuckles would be.
  9. Put an almond at the end of the dough finger. This will be a fingernail.
  10. Brush the beaten egg onto the biscuits.
  11. Heat the oven to 180 degrees and bake the cookies for 12–15 minutes until they’re a golden colour.
  12. Use a brush to add a little cinnamon to the knuckles.
  13. Add the fake blood (food dye or jam) to the back of each cookie and the nails using a small brush.

ABOUT ANN

Since April 2020, I’ve been working as a management assistant at Zùsto. It’s not just a nice product to work with; the company, and the people are also awesome. I’m honoured to be part of the team.

After all, it’s thanks to this team that I’ve been introduced to Zùsto. And honestly, I’m now using it regularly in the kitchen. I really wouldn’t be able to get by without it.
